A New York Supreme Court judge has ruled in favor of Cornell University, dismissing a lawsuit filed by a student who sought to overturn disciplinary actions taken against him. The legal challenge stemmed from an investigation into an alleged gang rape that occurred on October 19, 2024, at the university's Chi Phi fraternity house.

The student, identified in court documents as John Doe, had been sanctioned by the university for attempted sexual exploitation. The disciplinary panel determined that his decision to go to a room after receiving a Snapchat message reading "Free P***y" constituted an attempt to exploit the situation. Doe argued that he visited the room out of uncertainty regarding the message's intent and to retrieve a vape, maintaining that he had no illicit intentions.

During the disciplinary proceedings, the alleged victim testified that the presence of the two men in the room was intimidating, describing them as voyeurs. She further stated that their decision to arrive at the scene after viewing the explicit social media message was unacceptable. Following the hearing, Cornell imposed a no-contact order, mandated a social media and sexual harassment course, and required the student to submit a reflection paper.

Doe’s legal team challenged the university's process, claiming he was not given a proper opportunity to defend himself against the specific charge of attempted sexual exploitation. Additionally, the defense alleged that a member of the disciplinary panel was distracted during witness testimony, suggesting she was driving for a portion of the hearing and failing to adhere to her responsibilities.

In its defense, Cornell maintained that the investigation was conducted fairly and in accordance with university policy. On September 23, 2026, the court affirmed the university's position, concluding that the disciplinary hearing was handled appropriately and that the student's rights had been fully protected throughout the process.
