Bosnian election results with nationalist parties leading

On 4 October 2026, Bosnia held its general elections, and the dominant ethnic‑based parties emerged victorious. The Bosniak Party of Democratic Action (SDA), the Croatian Democratic Union of Bosnia and Herzegovina (HDZ BiH) and the Serb Alliance of Independent Social Democrats (SNSD) each remained the strongest force within their respective communities.

Despite the clear wins, the election was marked by a record low turnout. Many voters stayed home, signalling a growing sense of apathy toward the political options on offer.

A new challenger made a splash in the Bosniak field, shaking up the traditional dynamics. Nevertheless, the overall result reinforced the entrenched nationalist structure that has long defined Bosnian politics.

Political analyst Tanja Topic noted that voters appear to look past the corruption, crime, nepotism and clientelism that underpin the current power structures. She warned that each wave of national homogenisation follows another, trapping the country in a vicious cycle of ethnic politics.

The outcome highlights the persistence of ethno‑national frameworks in Bosnia, even as citizens express discontent through low participation.
