On 20 October, schools in Genoa and several Ligurian towns were closed following an orange alert for heavy rain issued by Arpal.
The municipal operational centre (COC) announced a definitive closure of all educational facilities, citing intense precipitation on Sunday that raised the risk of flooding and landslides, especially in the city’s eastern areas. The decision was stated to be final and would not be subject to further evaluation during the day.
Other municipalities in the region had already adopted similar ordinances, and the shutdown extended to Savona, Albissola Marina, Albissola Superiore, Bergeggi, Carcare, Cosseria, Dego, Finale Ligure, Vado Ligure, and Bogliasco. Schools located in flood‑prone zones were shut for the entire day, while other institutions remained open under strict safety protocols.
The University of Genoa suspended classes, and several public services—including museums, libraries, and civic centres—were temporarily closed to protect residents.
The orange alert was in force from 7 a.m. until midnight, with yellow alerts before and after the period. After the alert, the probability of strong thunderstorms was low, but authorities urged residents to stay informed through local channels.
Residents were advised to monitor official communications from each municipality for any updates on weather conditions and the reopening of schools and services.
