Electronic Arts Shuts Down BioWare After Three Decades, Cancels Next Mass Effect

Electronic Arts announced Wednesday it is shutting down BioWare, the Edmonton-based studio responsible for landmark role-playing franchises including Mass Effect, Dragon Age and Baldur's Gate. The closure ends a history spanning more than three decades and follows a Bloomberg report indicating roughly 400 positions are being eliminated across the publisher, with about 50 affecting BioWare directly. Development on the next Mass Effect title, which would have been the fifth entry in the science-fiction series, has also been cancelled.

Founded in 1995 by a group of medical software developers, BioWare was acquired by EA in 2007 and built its reputation on narrative-driven, single-player experiences. Co-founder Trent Oster, now chief executive of Beamdog, described the closure as a sad moment, recalling the studio's growth from a handful of employees to over 400 during his tenure and calling the early years a magical period of creative discovery.

The studio's trajectory shifted after the 2019 release of Anthem, a multiplayer shooter that strayed from BioWare's core strength in story-rich adventures and failed to sustain a player base. Subsequent entries in its flagship series — Mass Effect: Andromeda in 2017 and Dragon Age: The Veilguard in 2024 — received mixed critical and fan reception, further clouding the studio's outlook.

The shutdown arrives amid broader upheaval for EA, which recently completed a $55 billion US sale of its business to a consortium including Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, Silver Lake Partners and Affinity Partners. The transaction has drawn scrutiny from Canadian labor unions over potential national security implications and added uncertainty to a domestic video game sector already contracting after a pandemic-era expansion.

In a farewell message, BioWare celebrated the communities that formed around its games, acknowledging the players who debated choices, bonded with characters and made the studio's worlds their own. The closure marks the end of an era for Canadian game development and one of the industry's most influential narrative studios.
