Naomi Osaka made a memorable return to the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo, blending high-fashion symbolism with clinical tennis to defeat Jasmine Paolini 6-3, 7-6(4) in the first round. Competing in the Japanese capital for the first time in four years, the seventh-seeded Osaka delighted the local crowd at the Ariake Coliseum with a walk-on outfit featuring a blue-and-white cape embroidered with cranes, a traditional Japanese symbol of peace designed by Hana Yagi.

The match saw Osaka establish early momentum, surging to a 3-0 lead in the opening set. Although the Italian world number 35 managed to level the score at 3-3, Osaka regained control by utilizing her powerful serve, finishing the match with seven aces and winning 80 percent of points on her first serve. Despite facing a physical setback that required treatment on her left foot midway through the second set, Osaka maintained her composure during critical moments.

The tension peaked in the twelfth game of the second set, where Paolini held three consecutive set points. Osaka successfully defended each one, utilizing a combination of aggressive forehands and backhand winners to force a tiebreak. A single mini-break, prompted by a forehand error from the Italian, proved decisive in handing the victory to the Japanese favorite after one hour and 37 minutes of play.

Reflecting on her homecoming, Osaka expressed satisfaction in collaborating with Yagi once again and bringing a creative flair to the tournament. The win marks a significant step for the 29-year-old, who has had a limited presence in Tokyo since her 2019 title run. Her previous appearances in the city were hampered by injury and illness, making this performance a welcome return to form.

Looking ahead, Osaka is set to face 18-year-old Slovakian wild card Mia Pohankova in the second round. Pohankova, the 2025 Wimbledon junior champion, earned her spot in the round of 16 after a convincing 6-1, 6-4 victory over qualifier Tereza Valentova. Elsewhere in the tournament, Yulia Putintseva advanced after a grueling three-set win against Maria Sakkari, setting up a high-stakes clash against top seed Elena Rybakina.
