A representation of a fitness transformation through weightlifting and diet

Zondwa Kula, a 43-year-old auditor based in London, has undergone a dramatic physical transformation, losing 203 pounds in just under 17 months. After reaching a peak weight of 388 pounds, Kula decided to prioritize his health to ensure he could be present for his two young daughters. The turning point came during a business trip to Egypt, where the need to purchase a larger wardrobe served as the catalyst for a permanent lifestyle change.

To achieve his goals, Kula partnered with a personal trainer at Ultimate Performance, focusing on weightlifting—a discipline that was entirely new to him. His training emphasized slow, controlled repetitions and a full range of motion to maximize effectiveness. While he found lower-body exercises like the pendulum and hack squat particularly challenging, he leveraged his natural leg strength to reach significant personal bests, including a 374-pound hack squat.

Dietary discipline played an equally critical role. Kula eliminated sugar, except for fruit, and limited his carbohydrate intake to vegetables. He maintained a daily intake of approximately 2,000 calories and 160 to 170 grams of protein, focusing on salmon, chicken, sea bass, and Greek yogurt. To remove guesswork, he used a dedicated app to log every meal and weigh his food to hit specific macronutrient targets.

As his fitness improved, his nutritional plan evolved. His trainer gradually reintroduced carbohydrates, such as oats, to provide the necessary fuel for increasingly intense workouts. Kula also integrated daily activity into his routine, often waking up at 4 a.m. to ensure he reached 10,000 steps before starting his workday.

The results extended beyond the scale. Kula reduced his body fat from 42% to 6% and no longer requires the blood pressure medication he had taken for a decade. While the rapid weight loss left him with some loose skin, he views it as a trophy representing his hard work and perseverance.

Now maintaining his weight with a 2,500-calorie diet, Kula occasionally enjoys sweets on special occasions by adjusting his caloric intake over the following days. He encourages others starting a similar journey to focus on the first step and maintain consistency to change their overall outlook on life.
