Amazon MGM Studios is pressing ahead with its Mass Effect television adaptation, according to sources at Prime Video, keeping the project alive despite the recent closure of BioWare, the studio behind the acclaimed science-fiction game franchise. The series has been in official development at the streamer since 2024, following years of failed attempts to bring the property to the big screen.
Creative team remains in place
As of August 2025, the core creative team remains unchanged. Doug Jung, known for his work on Mindhunter and Star Trek Beyond, continues as showrunner, while Daniel Casey, writer of Fast & Furious 9, is still handling the screenplay. Executive producers include Karim Zreik, whose credits include Jessica Jones; Mike Gamble, the former Mass Effect franchise lead at BioWare; and Ari Arad, the former head of Marvel Studios.
New story set after the original trilogy
The series will not revisit Commander Shepard's origin story from the games. Instead, it is set after the events of the original trilogy, charting new narrative territory within the established universe. Casey addressed speculation last April, denying reports that Prime Video had requested rewrites to make the show more accessible to viewers unfamiliar with the games.
Production timeline uncertain
An earlier internal target had aimed for a production start in the fourth quarter of 2026, though no official filming date or release window has been confirmed. The project follows Prime Video's successful adaptation of Fallout, which the studio hopes to replicate with another high-profile video-game property.
